Star Cutter has added a Lasertec precision laser cutting machine to its Tool Reconditioning Center. This machine enhances the company’s ability to quickly restore polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools to their original condition, helping lower the cost of ownership over the life of the tool for its customers.

The Lasertec can handle highly complex tools, offering very fine cutting and the ability to address a smaller inside RCMX Insert radius and sharper cutting edge on the PCD than EDM technology. The laser machine also offers high repeatability and reproducibility with a positioning accuracy of ≤ 0.2032 μ. Additionally, there is less handling of the tool that has chip breakers, as the lasered chip breakers can be machined in the same step and position as when Lathe Carbide Inserts the cutting edge is made, eliminating the need for a second clamping operation.

Star Cutter provides reconditioning for its own PCD products — 3D-printed tools, circular mills, interpolating tools, facemills, combination tools, reamers and drills — as well as other manufacturer’s tools. The reconditioning center is equipped to repair these products to their original conditions.

Tungaloy has expanded its AH8000 physical vapor deposition-coated (PVD) grade series of ISO turning inserts to include 14 new negative inserts with an SDM chipbreaker.

The PVD-coated insert grade series AH8000 performs in turning operations of heat resistant superalloys (ONHU Insert HRSAs), which is made possible by nano-multi-layered AlTiN coating with high aluminum content and enhanced coating substrate adhesion. The series offers two grades: first-choice grade AH8015 is suitable from medium to finish cutting for a wide range of machining conditions, while AH8005 provides the insert with wear resistance that enables long and predictable tool life in high-speed continuous cutting operations.

The SDM chipbreaker features a T-land with variable widths and optimized rake angle VBGT Insert that provide the insert with resistance against notch wear. Difficult metals like HRSAs are prone to cause notch wear on the insert cutting edge that can severely deteriorate insert tool life. Tungaloy says the combination of SDM geometry and the AH8000 grade series will extend tool life and provide superior predictability.

Complementing existing HRF chipbreaker for finish operations and HRM for finish to medium cutting operations, SDM further expands the application coverage of the AH8000 series, as well as contributes to machining cost reductions.

Star SU offers the Bourn and Koch 400 H seven-axis horizontal hobbing machine featuring a FANUC CNC and 16IR Insert point-to-point array hobbing capability. The machine Lathe Carbide Inserts is designed for longer spline shafts as well as spur and helical gears ranging to 400 mm in diameter and 6.4 module. The machine can be configured for dry or wet hobbing.

The company also offers the FFG Werke Modul H200 vertical hobbing machine designed for dry cutting applications for small automotive applications, with the option of using oil or emulsion. According to the company, chips are cleanly conveyed from the work area by means of a chute, which is designed to prevent any buildup. The hob head is housed within the tool column, which is tightly fastened to the sturdy machine bed. The tailstock is located on the tool column above the hob head, designed to leave the work area free for workpiece loading and unloading operations.
