When Standard Tools Won't Do

GWS Tool group believes the perfect cutting tool is achieved when all the features of the tool are perfectly aligned with all the numerous variables within the machining environment. While recognizing perfection is hard to come by, GWS strives to do just Carbide Threading Inserts that by getting as close as possible, deviating from the stereotypical "off-the-shelf” tool. Be it a slightly longer length for reach, tighter tolerances to minimize finishing operations or enhanced coatings and substrates to extend life, there are many reasons why custom tools are a benefit to companies, GWS says.

GWS Tool Group has built one of the largest cutting tool manufacturing networks in North America, specifically aimed at producing custom tools for American manufacturers. The company says there is almost no tooling need it cannot meet — from milling, holemaking and threading tools to PCD, CBN and ceramic inserts. GWS says it has localized custom cutting tool capabilities to enhance nearly any metalworking application.

By either utilizing one of its high-performance CNC Inserts standard products or with its expansive custom tool capability, GWS strives to provide its customers with the perfect cutting tool that maximizes efficiencies and reduces costs.

PcBN Tool Grades for Hard Turning Applications

Fives offers Citco’s CiBN HT series of cutting tools with coated polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) grades for hard turning applications. The series is designed to improve consistency and performance by applying the latest advances in synthesis and coating technologies. Carbide Turning Inserts The series offers high performance, reliability and consistency, the company says.

The complete CiBN portfolio covers a range of application demands for hard turning. Materials are available in low content for high-precision continuous hard turning, medium content for moderate to heavily-interrupted hard turning, Milling inserts and high content for improved toughness behavior in heavily-interrupted operations and abrasive materials.

The series incorporates the newest generation of PcBN-grade formulations and incorporates the latest advances in synthesis research, the company says. Each grade is individually matched with high-performance coatings based on the HiPIMS PVD coating technology. The combination of PcBN grade, coating and manufacturing technique is said to provide a balance between chemical resistance and toughness, thus increasing the utility range of the insert.

Simulation Helps Optimize CNC Machining

Spring Technologies will demonstrate its NCSIMUL Solutions 10, an all-in-one digital suite. The company will focus on its most popular modules in the suite, the NCSIMUL Machine and NCSIMUL CAM. With this software, users can simulate, verify, optimize and review machine programs based on the characteristics of the machine tools. According to the company, 3D graphics help to avoid machining crashes while algorithms and embedded process-based knowledge enable cutting conditions to be optimized. The software is said to reduce the time spent on debugging programs and prevent the risk of spindle collision, tool breakage and scrap. It is also designed to improve cycle times and optimize processes.

Also on display will be the NCSIMUL CAM. rod peeling inserts This module Surface Milling Inserts enables users to change the target machine without reprogramming efforts.

Cartridge System Provides The Stability Of An Integral Shank Tool

The MTC Serrated Locking System (SLS) cartridge system from Manchester Tool Company consists of a toolholder and a cartridge, which simplifies the standard multi-component design into one piece. Both the toolholder and the cartridge bar peeling inserts have serrations or interlocking ridges on the inner sides. These Surface Milling Inserts serrations create a tight fit between the cartridge and the toolholder, says the company. Once the toolholder and cartridge are locked together, the system provides stability that is said to be comparable to that of an integral shank tool. The cartridge accommodates any of the MTC double-ended, double V design inserts. Each insert locks into position with one screw. These components perform cutoff, plunge-and-turn, plunge-and-contour and face grooving operations.

Laser Drilling Machine For Difficult Alloys

The VLD-300 is a compact laser drill that provides a 12"-cube (300 × 300 × 300 mm) work envelope. The five-axis Nd:YAG laser machine is designed for precise, high speed operation. It works with CO2, diode-pumped lasers as well as fiber lasers for aerospace, electronics, medical and automotive parts. One common application for this machine is drilling jet engine parts from materials such as Inconel, Waspalloy, Hastalloy or nickel-based titanium alloys. These parts Lathe Carbide Inserts can require as many as 3,000 tiny airflow holes, each at a different angle. The machine offers positioning accuracy and repeatability in the X, Y and Z axes of 0.00004" (0.001 mm). A-axis rotational positioning accuracy is ±6 arc seconds and repeatability is ±3 arc seconds. C-axis rotational accuracy is ±4 arc seconds, with repeatability of ±2 arc seconds. Acceleration rates are 1.5G in the X, Y and Z axes. The VLD-300s cast iron bed and linear motors provide rigidity and stability. A dust collection system, combined with an interior work area with smooth, highly sloped surfaces, keeps cutting debris from contaminating Carbide Turning Inserts the work zone and machine components. The Nd:YAG system offers a focal length of 200 or 300 mm and has a height sensor for scanning and work offset probing. The machine can be fitted with pallets and robotic loading/unloading equipment for automated operation. The machine, laser and auxiliary equipment are all run by a Fanuc 310iM control featuring a Windows-based platform.
