Allied Machine and Engineering displays its newest addition to the T-A Pro high-penetration drilling system — the M geometry insert — at IMTS in booth #431436 in the West Hall. With the release of the ISO-material class M geometry, targeting stainless steel and high-temp super alloy (HRSA) materials, and proprietary margin design paired with the development of the new AM460 coating, Allied Machine says it is able to provide a tool that offers low cutting forces, excellent penetration rates and long tool life in challenging stainless high-temp super alloys. The new insert geometry produces ideal results with the newly designed T-A tungsten carbide inserts Pro holders, the company notes, but is also compatible with T-A holders.

When asked for the single most important feature of this technology for a mold builder, Allied Machine points to the insert’s geometry with proprietary margin reliefs, which is said to significantly reduce the amount of heat around the outside diameter of the cut. It also provides a simple drilling solution for an otherwise difficult-to-machine material group like stainless steel, which moldmakers often use for either corrosion resistance or for medical-grade use.

Rollomatic’s LaserSmart laser and ablation machine produces sharp corner radii in the polycrystalline diamond (PCD) industry with a maximum radius on the cutting edge below 1.0 micron; it can also produce a defined radius of 3, 6 and 9 microns. This machine is designed to provide higher quality in the production of high-performance PCD, cubic boron nitride (cBN) and CVD cutting tools, which traditionally require production by a double process of spark erosion and polish grinding.

Fine laser cutting achieves a superfine cutting edge with a surface finish gravity turning inserts said to be unachievable by grinding, EDM or EDG. Star Cutter has added a Lasertec precision laser cutting machine to its Tool Reconditioning Center. This machine enhances the company’s ability to quickly restore polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools to their original condition, helping lower the cost of ownership over the life of the tool for its customers.

The Lasertec can handle highly complex tools, offering very fine cutting and the ability to address a smaller inside RCMX Insert radius and sharper cutting edge on the PCD than EDM technology. The laser machine also offers high repeatability and reproducibility with a positioning accuracy of ≤ 0.2032 μ. Additionally, there is less handling of the tool that has chip breakers, as the lasered chip breakers can be machined in the same step and position as when Lathe Carbide Inserts the cutting edge is made, eliminating the need for a second clamping operation.

Star Cutter provides reconditioning for its own PCD products — 3D-printed tools, circular mills, interpolating tools, facemills, combination tools, reamers and drills — as well as other manufacturer’s tools. The reconditioning center is equipped to repair these products to their original conditions.

Tungaloy has expanded its AH8000 physical vapor deposition-coated (PVD) grade series of ISO turning inserts to include 14 new negative inserts with an SDM chipbreaker.

The PVD-coated insert grade series AH8000 performs in turning operations of heat resistant superalloys (ONHU Insert HRSAs), which is made possible by nano-multi-layered AlTiN coating with high aluminum content and enhanced coating substrate adhesion. The series offers two grades: first-choice grade AH8015 is suitable from medium to finish cutting for a wide range of machining conditions, while AH8005 provides the insert with wear resistance that enables long and predictable tool life in high-speed continuous cutting operations.

The SDM chipbreaker features a T-land with variable widths and optimized rake angle VBGT Insert that provide the insert with resistance against notch wear. Difficult metals like HRSAs are prone to cause notch wear on the insert cutting edge that can severely deteriorate insert tool life. Tungaloy says the combination of SDM geometry and the AH8000 grade series will extend tool life and provide superior predictability.

Complementing existing HRF chipbreaker for finish operations and HRM for finish to medium cutting operations, SDM further expands the application coverage of the AH8000 series, as well as contributes to machining cost reductions.

Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of industrial cutting products and software, is introducing four new SmartSync torches for Hypertherm Powermax Sync plasma systems. TPKT Insert The torches are available in two different lengths, 0.6 m (2') and 1.2 m (4'), with two different torch head angles — 45° and 90°.

Hypertherm long torches are said to be used for a wide variety of jobs, including cutting coupons at steel mills and risers and runners at foundries, decommissioning or demolishing ships and nuclear facilities, scrapping metal for recycling and removing RCGT Insert skeletons from cutting tables.

According to Hypertherm, these new torches automatically set the correct amperage, air pressure and operating mode upon installation of the consumable cartridge and enable the operator to change the cartridge without returning to the power supply. The torches also come with Hypertherm’s FastConnect feature to make switching between torches fast and easy.

Compared to the first-generation Duramax Hyamp long torch, the new SmartSync long torches are lighter, reportedly requiring 45% less lifting force. In addition, the torches are manufactured with a new flexible lead for improved ergonomics and maneuverability.

One of my favorite pastimes is fishing. I enjoy getting out on the open water, free from daily worries and not having a care in the world except hooking up with a big trout or redfish. You just can't beat heading out into the back bays, trolling along a shoreline, sneaking up on a school of reds with their tails out of the water ready to strike at the first thing they see that looks like a tasty meal; hopefully my lure.On the other hand, not everyone has a boat or a friend that has a boat, and getting to the fish may seem almost impossible. Good news? All it took was a special rig that has been around for quite some time. The next time you go fishing, make sure you have one of these rigs in your tackle box.
